I read this book here in Brazil.When this book was published, information about the colossus, the english computer who broke "Enigma" code, wasn't available.Then, this book has nothing about Enigma machine and Colossus.
This book is short, concise, has many photos(all black & white) and this book is correct.As an introduction, about this subject, this book is a regular choice.
McDonald Publishing and the Imperial War Museum teamed up back in the late 1960s and early 1970s to publish this tight series of illustrated paperbacks on the history of World War I, World War II (and a few other conflicts of the 20th century), which were picked up by Ballantine in the United States. They were all divided into subjects battles, campaigns, weapons, war leaders, politics in action, human conflict, and regalia, by color bands on the bottom, enjoying common editing and artwork, and a fairly common collection of well-known historians. They cost $1 at the time (a good deal of money) and a lot more now (being out of print).

The series as a whole is slightly outdated by the disclosures from Allied codebreaking, and suffered from being whipped together in a hurry, but they remain then and now a fine introduction to conflict in the 20th century -- if you can find them.

This volume was always one of my absolute favorites in the series, written by Dr. Brian J. Ford. It suffers from one weakness it was written and published before the Enigma story was broken, so there is no mention anywhere within it about Bletchley Park, codebreaking, Fish, Shark, Triton, Bombes, cribs, or any other information that has become so familiar to more recent students of the secret war.

What is in the book, however, is extremely fascinating. The book covers such familiar ground as the development of the atomic bomb, Penicillin, the Dambuster raids, the Earthquake bombs, and radar. It also discusses some lesser-known topics, like plastic surgery, skin grafts, aerial photography, rockets and projectiles, Mulberry harbors, napalm, chemical weapons (and their lack of use), and "Window."

There are some interesting subjects the bizarre attempt to fire grapnels aloft from merchant ships to bring down low-flying bombers, the "Grand Pajandrum," which had a spectacular filmed failure on a British beach, the development of blood banks, plastic surgery, and sulfa drugs, which enabled the Allies to treat their wounded with great efficiency and fewer deaths from infection.

The book is full of excellent photographs and illustrations of the various weapons (and their uses), including three shocking photographs of the "Trinity" A-bomb test. The captions, however, are out of order. In addition, the caption for the "Barnes Wallis's lighter-than-air dirigible" was put on the page of one of the A-bomb test photographs. Such was the problem with art departments and galleys back in the days of paper layouts, and probably as well in the days of computers.

Other than those minor production glitches, this book is a fine overview and introduction to the Allied secret weapon war, and a good start to the subject for a new student of it
