Excellent, well written story that despite being a little light on action, never slows or drags.First couple of chapters had me thinking this was going to be a Sherlock Holmes type story, but it quickly changes directions when you realize that while smart and good at his job, Inspector Lenoir just doesn't really care anymore about much of anything. He is not the arrogant Holmes, but rather a beaten down, waste of a man who is hard to like in the early part of the story. Then something happens that reminds the Inspector that there are things worth caring about, and that he has become cynical and way too much like the people that he used to despise. When his mysterious past catches up with him in the form of an avenging spirit, Lenoir accepts that he deserves punishment, but wants to at least do one final act of decency befitting a proper police Inspector.
While I agree with other reviewers that the world building was slightly lacking, and that there was little backstory, it did not distract me from the ongoing story, but rather just made me want to read more when I had finished the book.

Darkwalker A Nicolas Lenoir Novel EL Tettensor 9780451419989 Books Reviews
I really didn't care for the main character. He was too much of a jerk even with his back story revealed. Maybe an attempt at a house or Sherlock like character but fell flat to me. Although he grew in arc by the end, not to interested in reading any more of the series.
This starts off as a Sherlock Holmes variant but throws in a supernatural element. Overall a dark-mood story. and the problem is Lenoir was a very dislikable hero. The most interesting character of all was Vincent, the supernatural stalker. Wasn't enough to make me interested in reading any further books by this author.
I did like delving delving into the exotic supernatural. I did not like the confusion over where the protagonist comes from. I looked it up and his home was I'm the Swiss Alps, but the narration made him sounds very French. Is that the language of the Swiss Alps? I'll have to look it up. This is the first in a series I enjoyed a great deal.and will return to for the next installment.
I purchased this book to read while I traveled over the holidays, I was hoping that it would last me a week or so. I ended up not being able to put the book down, and finished reading it just a few days (I accomplished nothing else - good holiday! ).
I found his character interesting and admirable. There were many surprises in the book, and elements I wouldn't have predicted the led it to be a real page turner. I haven't enjoyed reading a novel as much since I read The Sister's Brothers by Patrick deWitt two years ago. I can't wait until the next Nicholas Lenoir novel comes out, it can't come soon enough.
Didn't manage to pull me in. The setting was okay, but the main character bad tempered and hard to like. There were some elements that would have made him more interesting if we'd known them earliier, but I got to about chapter 12 and started skimming, then quit.
I found the victim a more interesting character than the Inspector himself. I think the pace was a bit too slow, and that didn't help.
I usually read half a dozen books at a time. Then one book will grab me and I will read straight through. This was not one of those. In fact it took me about the first third to get interested. After that it just kept getting me more involved but still slowly. The story was good. If anything I'd say the pacing was just too slow for the first half. I'm glad I kept going. It did pull me through and the last quarter was quite good. I'd give the sequel the benefit of the doubt.
The beginning is a bit slow. I actually had to start the book again to get into it. But once I did it turned out to be pretty good. The world building was well done. The main character's back story was inventive and liked how author brought it into the current story line. The story had good twists and liked that not everything was resolved. I also liked how the main character evolved during the book and he wasn't a one dimensional jerk whom everyone tolerated because he was brilliant. Don't get me wrong-he is this at the beginning. But that changes through the course of the book. I really liked that. Both the mystery and the villain were well thought out. I recommend this book for those who like urban fantasy or gothic. Not really steampunk though there are a few steampunk elements. I would also recommend the book for those who like historical mysteries. Though this is not our world it is similar enough that mystery fans won't be overwhelmed by the fantasy elements.
Excellent, well written story that despite being a little light on action, never slows or drags.
